The quarter century of optimism, peace and comfort in Europe before the outbreak of the First World War, the Belle Époque was the period when Vienna was at the forefront of world culture. Also the heyday of the age of steam, it is the elegant third 20 euro silver coin in our Austrian Railways series.
Not only did they revolutionise industry and commerce, the railways brought freedom and mobility to a broad sector of society by making travel fast and affordable. The growth in passenger traffic led to the construction of magnificent railway stations in all of Europe’s great cities and Vienna was no exception. The jewel in Vienna’s transport crown was the North Station, the imposing interior of which features on the coin’s reverse, where an elegant society lady awaits passengers disembarking a train. The obverse shows a sleek and steaming type 310 locomotive. Built in Vienna by engineer Karl Gölsdorf between 1911 and 1916, the 310 was the locomotive of choice for powering express trains to and from the imperial capital at that time.
Minted to a maximum of 50,000 pieces in Proof quality only, each coin comes in an attractive case with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
