A popular tale from the Middle Ages, Charlemagne in the Untersberg is symbolic of the unwillingness of the people to accept the death of a great monarch. It is also the splendid fourth coin in our popular Austrian Tales and Legends series and a fitting tribute to such an abiding legend.

Intricate and detailed, the coin depicts the legend of the Holy Roman Emperor and his army sleeping beneath the Untersberg near Salzburg, though ready to wake from their slumber and be called back to action once ravens ceased flying above the mountain. A simple shepherd boy was chosen by a dwarf to inform Charlemagne whether ravens were still flying, which allowed the Emperor to go back to sleep for another century and thus avoided further strife and military conflict in the region.

Struck in 925 Sterling silver in Proof or Special Uncirculated quality with a maximum mintage of 40,000 and 30,000, respectively, both coins are issued in attractive packaging. However, a special collectors’ album resembling a handsome old book of classic tales for collecting all six Proof coins in this fantastic series is also available for purchase.
