Santa Claus may spend Christmas Eve descending chimneys in most European countries, but in Austria it is the Christkind who delivers Christmas presents to deserving children. This delightful yuletide offering shows exactly how the Christkind goes about his/her festive business.

But who exactly is the Christkind? Literally the Christ Child, in one sense it is the baby Jesus himself, while it may also be an angelic apparition that, according to folklore experts, stems from the traditional Austrian Christmas parades in which Mary and Joseph are accompanied by a long-haired girl in a white dress known as the Christkind. On one side, the medal shows the Christkind ringing her bell to signal that the presents have arrived and that the Christmas tree, shown on the other side, is now ready for the children.
