Forge your own good fortune and spread a little luck with our Lucky Token 2019. A symbol of luck in Austria, the pig has graced the Austrian Mint’s annual lucky token since 2016. Our New Year talisman 2019 features the happy hog merrily forging that most international of good luck symbols, the horseshoe.

One of the reasons horseshoes are considered lucky in some cultures is because they used to be made of iron, which was believed to keep evil spirits away. Another, in the Christian world, is the legend of St Dunstan, a 10th century blacksmith who eventually became the Archbishop of Canterbury. Legend has it that the Devil appeared one day in Dunstan’s smithy on the pretext of having his horse shod. By nailing the Devil’s foot instead of that of his horse, Dunstan made him promise that he would never enter a household with a horseshoe nailed to the door. A shower of four-leaf clovers, in place of sparks, rises from the anvil as the happy hog beats a horseshoe into shape.

This talisman is available in gold, silver, silver gold-plated, and bronze.
