The Calendar Medal 2020 celebrates the year of the moon, which is manifested on one side of the medal in the form of Artemis, ancient Greek goddess of the moon. In astrology, the moon dominates the star sign Cancer, which features on the other side of the medal encircled by the dates of all the national holidays and Sundays in the coming year. Artemis is also goddess of the hunt and if you are on the hunt for luck in 2020, you could do worse than have her by your side.

Naturally divine

The daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo, Artemis was the patron and protector of young girls, and was worshipped as one of the primary goddesses of childbirth. In addition to be being goddess of the hunt, she is also the goddess of the wilderness and wild animals. Responsible for the fertility of plants and the well-being of game, Artemis would protect them with her friends, the nymphs. This aspect of Artemis is symbolised in the silver bow and arrow she holds atop a cloud, with the moon for a backdrop. Preferring to remain a maiden who is sworn never to marry, Artemis is one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities and her temple at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The goddess Diana is her Roman equivalent.
