With almost half of Austria covered in woodland, the United Nations International Year of Forests 2011 has a special meaning to Austrians. This distinctive 5 euro silver coin highlights this initiative aimed at raising awareness about sustainability of all types of forest.

Expertly crafted by engraver Helmut Andexlinger and boasting an uncanny sense of perspective, the nine-sided coin recreates a typical forest scene on its reverse. Flora and fauna native to Austria, such as the red deer, pheasant and badger, are shown in a clearing near the banks of a river. Characteristic of the standard 5 Euro silver coin is its nine-sided shape and the circle of provincial shields surrounding the denomination on the obverse.

Issued in Special Uncirculated quality to a maximum mintage of 50,000 only, each coin is vacuum sealed and presented in a highly attractive and imaginatively designed blister pack featuring bilingual text in English and German. This comes complete with a sleeve that can be personalised when given as a gift. “Ein Stück Österreich” (a little piece of Austria) is written on the sleeve, which has space for the recipient’s name if given as a gift.
