A symbol of luck in Austria, the pig has graced our annual Lucky Token since 2016. The pig has long been a symbol of prosperity and wealth in many cultures, and was exactly that in ancient Greece and Rome, where people who owned many pigs were considered privileged. The scarcity of the four-leaved clover has made the plant a symbol of good luck since time immemorial; in Christian symbolism, it is considered a little piece of paradise because Eve is said to have taken one with her when she was expelled from the Garden of Eden. As for ladybirds, in former times the beetles were considered a symbol of protection in some cultures, as they saved farmers’ crops by feeding on the aphids that destroyed them.
