Founded on 1 June 1816, during the regency of Emperor Franz Joseph 1, the National Bank of Austria has long been the country’s official issuer of bank notes. During its eventful history the National Bank has also overseen the transition from the Gulden to the Crown, from the Schilling to the Reichsmark, and from the Schilling to the Euro. With the National Bank celebrating its bicentenary in 2016, there is no more fitting a subject for this year’s Official Austrian Euro Coin Set.
The Official Austrian Euro Coin Set 2016 also features a brand new 2 euro coin dedicated to the bicentenary of the National Bank of Austria. Like the other seven coins in the set it is a Special Uncirculated coin designed to meet the most exacting standards. As a ‘first strike’ – an early strike in a series struck from a new die – immediately after minting each coin is quality checked and packed with care to ensure that every single one is an unblemished masterpiece.
