Retro Medal
Christmas Austrian Style
Santa Claus may bring children their Christmas presents in many European countries, but that is not the case in Austria. This honour falls to the Christkind (literally the Christ Child), who comes in secret on Christmas Eve. But who excatly is the Christkind?
In one sense it is the baby Jesus himself, while it may also be an angelic appartition that, according to folklore experts, stems from the traditinal Austrian Christmas parades in which Mary and Joseph are accompanied by a long-haired girl in a white dress known as the Chistkind.
On one side this delightful 2015 Christmas medal shows the Christkind ringing her bell to signal that the presents have arrived and that the Christmas tree, shown on the other side, is now ready for the children.
