Struck in commemoration of the “Ski festival with heart”, as the World Alpine Ski Championship 2013 has been labelled, this sleek and stylish 5 euro copper coin is a must for all winter sports enthusiasts.
After a 31-year gap, skiers from 70 nations go head to head in Schladming, Austria, for the first time since 1982. Just before the finish line in the Planai stadium they have to pass under the impressive “Skygate” arch, which is the symbol of Schladming 2013 and features on the coin’s reverse next to a competitive skier in full race mode. Stylised snowflakes and 2013 in the shape of a medal winners’ podium add the finishing touches to the coin’s dynamic design. The obverse of the nine-sided coin shows the circle of nine provincial shields around the coin’s 5 euro denomination. A very special coin for what will no doubt prove to be a momentous sporting occasion for the ski-loving Austrians.
