Vienna is a city like no other. By far the largest metropolis in a small, mainly rural nation, it goes without saying that the capital is unlike the rest of Austria. But Vienna is also different from most other capital cities: all capitals are cultural hubs but few boast as much culture per square metre as Vienna.
Three of the city’s most iconic cultural institutions are celebrated in this superb silver coin set. Considered Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO since 2010, the Spanish Riding School continues to delight both connoisseurs and newcomers to horsemanship almost half a millennium since its foundation in 1565.
The highlight of the Vienna ball season, the Vienna Opera Ball has been held at the Vienna State Opera since 1877, but for a 17-year hiatus caused by the Second World War.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra gave what is considered to be its first ever performance on 28 March 1842. Conducted by Otto Nicolai, the concert lay the foundations for the brilliant performances that the world-famous orchestra is still famous for today. A cultural trinity that any capital city would be proud of.
