Seamlessly blending tradition, elegance and rustic joie de vivre, the dirndl is so much more than just a dress. With its flowing skirt and fitted waist, the dirndl is as sartorially symbolic of Austria as the tracht and the lederhosen, while adding colour and celebrating femininity.
Aufdirndln – Linen, the first coin in our Trachten – Traditional and Trendy series, celebrates this most iconic of dresses. A tribute to a garment that has captivated generations, whether as a gift, keepsake or a token of your appreciation of Austrian culture, the coin is ideal for any occasion.
A tradition that never gets old, dirndl, trachten and lederhosen are to Austria what the kilt is to Scotland and the kimono is to Japan Originally the workaday clothing of the rural population of Austria, this traditional attire is now becoming increasingly popular in the cities as well.
Irrespective of the type of celebration, the dirndl always brings fun to the party and, whether in its classic or modern interpretation, remains a true eye-catcher. The dirndl was traditionally made from linen. A robust, breathable material that comes from the flax plant, which flourishes in many parts of Austria, linen is not only durable, environmentally friendly and timelessly appealing, it also adds a truly special touch to the dirndl. Several different types of fabric now play a role in the production of the dress. In combination with the broad range of colours and designs used, this makes each dirndl unique.
The coin’s reverse shows a woman wearing a white linen blouse under a sleeveless dirndl with an apron on top. The apron is the centrepiece of the dirndl and also harbours a secret – the bow reveals whether the dirndl wearer’s heart is spoken for or not. In her raised left hand and her basket, the woman carries flax flowers, from which linen is made. The coin’s obverse features tools for processing linen and products made by hand using the fabric.
Crafted in pure silver, the Aufdirndln – Linen coin captures the essence of the dirndl and honours its historical significance and enduring legacy, as well as the irresistible charm of traditional fashion.
Engraver Anna Schlindner was assisted in her work on this coin by her colleague Elena Dolgova.
