Trachten - Traditional and Trendy: The new 10-Euro-series

In Austria, all children are taught to leave the house ‘neat and tidy’, meaning with their nose blown and their hair combed. The meaning of neat and tidy may have changed over the course of history, but some things have remained the same, including traditional clothing made from regional materials such as linen, leather, loden and antler.

According to trachten expert Gexi Tostmann: "Historical, social and political developments are always expressed in traditional costume. The personal touch of the innovative designers is very evident in contemporary trachten..."

A dirndl is essentially a tight bodice with a wide skirt and an apron over it; the variations in its length and colours are almost inexhaustible. It’s high time we dedicated a special series to our distinctive dirndl, lederhosen, loden jacket and ornate horn buttons. Hooray for Trachten!

The second coin in the series: "Aufbrezeln - Leather"

No other item of clothing symbolises Austrian culture and identity quite like a pair of lederhosen. With elegance and timeless appeal, each pair is unique, preserving memories and telling stories of the inseparable connection between people and nature.

Originally designed to withstand the harsh mountain climate and the physical demands of work in forestry and agriculture, lederhosen are made from sturdy deer or chamois leather. Historically, they were a reliable companion that often lasted a lifetime and were passed down through the generations. Today, decorations fashioned from elaborate embroidery featuring animal and plant motifs adorn many lederhosen, symbolising a deep connection to nature, resilience and regional pride.

Whether worn at folk festivals, family gatherings or in everday life, lederhosen connect the past, present and future. A man wearing intricately embroidered lederhosen and other traditional attire is shown seated on the coin’s reverse. His hat, clothing and walking stick are colour-printed. A horizontal decorative band with a stag motif adorns the background. The coin’s obverse features tools and products used in leatherworking. In the background on the left, a section of a traditional belt with quill embroidery runs horizontally, in front of which stands a stitching awl.
