Trachten - Traditional and Trendy: The new 10-Euro-series

In Austria, all children are taught to leave the house ‘neat and tidy’, meaning with their nose blown and their hair combed. The meaning of neat and tidy may have changed over the course of history, but some things have remained the same, including traditional clothing made from regional materials such as linen, leather, loden and antler.

According to trachten expert Gexi Tostmann: "Historical, social and political developments are always expressed in traditional costume. The personal touch of the innovative designers is very evident in contemporary trachten..."

A dirndl is essentially a tight bodice with a wide skirt and an apron over it; the variations in its length and colours are almost inexhaustible. It’s high time we dedicated a special series to our distinctive dirndl, lederhosen, loden jacket and ornate horn buttons. Hooray for Trachten!

Second Coin in the Series: Aufbrezeln – Leather

Perhaps more than any other article of clothing, lederhosen embody the history of Alpine culture, which has developed over thousands of years. This is because, more than just fabric worn on the body, clothing also carries meaning, tells stories and sends messages, never more so than in the case of traditional attire as it expresses a sense of belonging, pride and tradition. Lederhosen are a prime example of that.

Unlike the fine woolen trousers known as lodenhosen, which were reserved for Sundays or special occasions, lederhosen were the workaday clothing of the male rural population of Austria. But more than a century ago the aristocracy fell in love with the romantically rustic look while summering in rural areas. Once the nobility began to take an interest, both lederhosen and dirndl began to be accepted as everyday wear in Austria.
