Title: The City Temple – Heart of Jewish Life in Vienna
The City Temple is Vienna's main synagogue and has been a living symbol of Jewish culture, history, and the present since 1826. Built between 1822 and 1826 according to plans by imperial architect Joseph Kornhäusel, the monument today stands for openness, tradition, and the future. As the heart of Jewish life in Vienna, the City Temple brings together daily prayers, weekly Shabbat, bar and bat mitzvah celebrations, weddings, circumcisions, and other Jewish ceremonies—in a listed building that breathes history while offering space for the present and always looking to the future.
To mark the 200th anniversary of this important building, the Münze Österreich is issuing a commemorative medal. A lasting symbol that makes history visible.
The coin motifs:
On one side, the medal features Psalm 100, verse 4, which is written above the entrance portal of the Vienna City Temple. The circular text reproduces its content in German: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise!” The halo is modeled after the dome of the temple.
The other side shows a section of the City Temple with a view of the Torah shrine.
