The Stadttempel – the Heart of Jewish Life in Vienna
Since 1826, Vienna’s main synagogue, the Stadttempel, has stood as a living symbol of Jewish culture, history and contemporary life. Built between 1822 and 1826 to the designs of Imperial architect Joseph Kornhäusel, the synagogue today represents openness, tradition and the future. As the centerpiece of Jewish life in Vienna, the Stadttempel brings together daily prayer, weekly Shabbat services, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings, circumcisions and other Jewish celebrations, within a listed historic site that breathes history, provides space for the present and always looks to the future.
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of this historic landmark, Münze Österreich is issuing a commemorative medal – a lasting symbol that makes history visible.
Medal motif
The centre of one side of the medal features Psalm 100, verse 4, which is inscribed above the entrance portal of the Stadttempel. The text around the edge of the medal gives its content in German: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts of the Jerusalem Temple with praise! The radiant halo surrounding the verse is modelled on the synagogue’s dome. The other side shows a section of the Stadttempel with a view of the Torah Ark.
