In the spectacular Ausseerland region of central Austria, the narcissus is celebrated in grand style every year. At the Narzissenfest, Austria’s largest flower festival, the delicate bloom of the star shaped narcissus takes centre stage. The highlight of the multi-day event is the magnificent parade of elaborate floral sculptures. Lovingly crafted with great attention to detail, these figures – ranging from animals and mythical creatures to traditional motifs – are paraded through the streets before being gently floated across the lake. As well as honouring the narcissus, the festival celebrates togetherness and the rich traditions of the region.
Coin motif
The Narcissus coin’s reverse features four narcissi in bloom, representing the three species of the flower that are native to Austria. Depicted on the left is the star shaped narcissus (narcissus radiiflorus), while the white daffodil, also known as the poet's narcissus (narcissus poeticus), is depicted in the centre and the wild daffodil, also known as the Lent lily (narcissus pseudonarcissus), is on the right. On the obverse of the nine-sided coin, Austria’s nine provincial coats of arms are arranged in a circular pattern.
