1776–2026
250 YEARS OF THE BURGTHEATER
In 1776, Emperor Joseph II declared what would later become Vienna’s Burgtheater the “German National Theatre”, with the primary aim of establishing German as the language spoken on stage. This was a deliberate effort to elevate the German language and counter the dominance of French and Italian – the languages then associated with the cultural elite.
As the national theatre of Austria, the Burgtheater is one of the oldest and largest theatres in Western Europe. Known for its high artistic standards, the theatre has nurtured many of the leading lights of the dramatic arts.
Comprising each of the eight euro and cent coins in circulation, this set is ideal as a gift, a lasting memento or a fitting souvenir of Austria, which features native flowers, iconic buildings and illustrious Austrians.
