125 Years of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra

Its founding under the name Vienna Concert–Verein in 1900 marked the beginning of the impressive story of an orchestra that was to have a lasting impact on Vienna’s musical culture. The Orchestra’s vision: symphonic masterpieces of the very highest quality – yet accessible to all.

Inspired by the spirit of Viennese modernism, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra made its debut under Ferdinand Löwe in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein on 30 October 1900. Since then, the Orchestra has uniquely combined the traditional and the innovative, the past and the future.

The Orchestra was the first in Vienna to present all of Beethoven’s symphonies in one cycle and made musical history with world premieres of works by Bruckner, Schönberg and Ravel. Great conductors such as Karajan, Sawallisch and Prêtre shaped the Orchestra’s unmistakable sound. As a cultural bridge to the people, it played at workers’ concerts and to this day still performs in Vienna’s different districts.

The 100 euro gold coin commemorating the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra celebrates the golden heritage of more than a century of Viennese musical history.

Coin Motifs

In the centre of the coin’s obverse, utterly absorbed in her music, a female violinist plays as if the melody is touching her soul. In the background, an ornamental band in a delicate modernist floral pattern seems to bring the music to life. In front of the violinist’ shoulder a lyre symbolises inspiration and creativity.

On the coin’s reverse, a symbol of the beauty and power of music, Euterpe, the muse of music in Greek mythology, plays her flute surrounded by typical classical music instruments – the Viennese horn, harp and cello. The motif is complemented by Art Nouveau ornamentations.
