A big and a small Christmas miracle
The star of Bethlehem shines high in the sky. Stars twinkle all around. Mary leans tenderly over her child, who lies in a manger woven from branches. Joseph, her fiancé, stands protectively at her side, providing light. The perfect nativity scene from today's perspective.
Early Christian depictions, however, show only the baby Jesus with the two animals—the ox and the donkey. It was not until the Middle Ages that the figure of Mary was added, and Saint Joseph even later. Preserved for eternity, we can now see the complete image of the Holy Family on an ornate medal.
The second side of this masterpiece shows the first verse of “Silent Night, Holy Night,” the world's most famous Christmas carol. The title, which is now part of UNESCO's cultural heritage, was first performed on December 24, 1818, by organist and village schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber and assistant priest Joseph Mohr in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg. Mohr had already written the lyrics in the form of a poem in 1816 and asked Gruber to compose a melody.
To date, the piece has been translated into more than 300 languages and dialects. The lyrics are adorned on the medal by the leaves of a poinsettia.
With the 2013 Christmas medal, you are giving a valuable memento of the festive season for the whole family.
