Lucky Token 2025: The Cat
The Lucky Token 2025 features our lucky little pig Kurti visiting a Maneki-neko, the world-famous lucky Japanese cat. The pair are waving happily, while the cute kitten is also holding a tablet with the inscription 千万両, or 10 million ryo, which means may you become wealthy in the new year, making the token the perfect New Year gift.
Maneki-neko: the beckoning cat
Sitting upright, ears erect and sporting a bell on its collar, the Maneki-neko beckons to the observer. If it does this with its right paw, as on the token, it promises good luck and a good life. Waving cats are often placed in private homes to bring prosperity and keep bad luck at bay.
The current form of the Maneki-neko is based on the Japanese Bobtail cat. At the beginning of the Edo period (1603 to 1867), the Japanese imperial court began breeding the cats to help rid its silkworm plantations of the rodents and birds that ravaged them. There had been other cats at court before, but their long tails destroyed the precious webs of the silk moths.
The following inscription appears on the back of the lucky token: “Small and round I may be yet every hour I bring luck to thee”.
The Lucky Token 2025 is also available in gold, silver gold-plated and silver.
